Shepherds Expressive Writing Workshop is underway for Freshmen and Sophomores. Presented by Ms. Nancy Day, Journalist, Professor & Chair of Journalism Department at Colombia College, Chicago and Ms. Allison Waggener, Yale University Graduate and Writing Coach, students got expressive and even active as they participated in exercises such as acting out expressive verbs and learned about the differences between “showing” v. “telling” a story in their writing.

Students have completed 3 out of the 5 Wednesdays that focus on “Expressing Yourself Effectively!”. Students will continue to develop techniques for distilling their ideas in writing in a clear and concise manner. They goal at the end of the workshop is for each student to effectively and expressively tell their personal story.

It was Shepherds Hockey Night at The Bridgeport Islanders Islanders last Sunday, 2/26!

Shepherds mentors and their students enjoyed a private tour of the Total Mortgage Arena and then the puck dropped at 5pm for the Islanders v. Phantoms. It was a 4-3 loss for the Islanders but a win for our group as they enjoyed exciting hockey, great food, fun music and a lot of fun! Nyasha, Mariela and Cindy even made it on the jumbotron!

The idea for creating a mentor oriented, financial support non-profit didn’t just descend from the clouds, although it could be called an inspired mission.

Barnet (Barney) Phillips, then a partner at firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LP, brought his insights and experience as a founding member of Student Sponsored Partners in NYC and along with many other like-minded friends in the local Connecticut community committed their time, networks, and importantly their resources to inaugurate a similar program in Fairfield County.

It’s hard to dimension the untold hours of nurturing care and dedication Barney and Sharon have given to perpetuating the Shepherds opportunity for an education and friendship to the young people in CT. From the early days as mentors themselves, recruiters of new mentors, fund raisers in the community to keep Shepherds going and growing.

On this evening, we seek to recognize and honor them for their inspired leadership, enduring commitment, and boundless generosity to a mission that needed to be undertaken 25 years ago, whose purpose persists today, and likely, tomorrow.

Thank you, Barney and Sharon,

Since 1998, Shepherds has been embarked on a mission to close the opportunity gap for underserved and under resourced young people in Connecticut’s inner cities.

In our first year, we served five students at Kolbe Cathedral High School in Bridgeport. In the intervening 25 years, over 350 Shepherds students have successfully graduated from high school and gone on to institutions of higher learning or to serve their community or our country in civil and military careers.

Today, over 60 students participate in our two partner schools and with our 25 th Anniversary Gala, Educate & Celebrate, we intend to build upon that success. Through the generosity ofdonors, sponsors, and guests at this event, we seek to raise the funds to support the next phase of Shepherds’ mission. Our goal is to raise $600,000 which will support thirty more Shepherds students over the next five years.

Your support of Shepherds’ work and this goal is greatly appreciated.

Daniel AguirreDaniel Aguirre is a Junior in Notre Dame’s Class of 2024. Since entering Notre Dame in the Fall of 2020, Daniel has grown exponentially. When Notre Dame adopted the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in 2021, Dan applied at the end of his sophomore year. Amongst many applicants, Dan was accepted into the program.

He has since achieved first honors in the program- a program which is internationally recognized as being one of the most academically challenging program for high schoolers. In fact, colleges and universities recognize this IB diploma to be one of the most attractive achievements an applicant can have. Dan is gifted in the area of mathematics and science, and he looks forward to his college options over the next year.

His Engineering Design teacher, Dr. Yolanda Valencia, says…”Daniel is a bright young man who is always willing to help his peers. In our class he always enters the room with a kind demeanor, and a warm smile and enthusiastically participates in class discussions.” Additionally, Dan has been inducted into the “Mu Alpha Theta” Math Honor Society as well as the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. He is excited to celebrate his induction at the Honors Night ceremony later this year.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dan’s athletic career is nothing short of impressive. Dan is a two-sport athlete of both the 2022 Class M Varsity State Champion Football team as well as the Wrestling team. This year, Daniel has seen much improvement in his wrestling record which is a testament to his hard work and determination. Notre Dame Head Wrestling coach, Rich Anderson, says… “Dan has been a leader on and off the wrestling mat. He successfully went down two weight classes and did it in a manner that he maintained his strength and health. This is the mark of a leader. He did what was best for the team. His record this year has improved immensely and he has contributed to us winning some big matches.”

When asked about the Shepherds program, Daniel’s face lit up. He remarked that without the Shepherds program, his attendance at Notre Dame High School, as well as the guidance of his mentor, would not be a possibility. He certainly has taken advantage of every opportunity offered, and we look forward to watching Daniel continue to work towards his dreams.

February is the month that Hallmark compels us to spend $5.99 one or more times to confirm our affection and appreciation to the loved ones in our lives. Now we all do that, but which ones of us actually show that affection and appreciation? That’s where the mentor-student team of Susan Terry and Ali C. shows up in living color.

A relationship that started mid-COVID behind masks and Facetime has blossomed into one of the closest Shepherds relationships in the program. Ali, a Kolbe Cathedral Junior, captain of the Girls soccer team and an academic all-star, praises Susan, “The two words to describe my mentor are caring and selfless. She cares about what I say and how I feel and never forgets what I tell her. She is a giving person who cares about others deeply.”

Susan exudes the same joy being in Ali’s life: “The two years I have known her have flown by!  In that time, she has gotten her license and taken on a part time job.  These days I often will meet her for lunch at school for a quick check in.  Ali is a good student and has a really good head on her shoulders.  We are definitely really good buddies, but I hope that I can help her to see that she is capable of so much.  She has many gifts. I look forward to the next part of the journey which includes the college process!”

On behalf of Shepherds’ students and the staff and Board of Shepherds, we recognize and celebrate our Shepherds Mentors during the month of January…and every other day of the year! You have generously volunteered your time to help change a life.

And, we celebrated…with ‘Cocktails & Conversation’

What a great turnout we had for our wonderful evening at The Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport, CT on Thursday, January 26th at 6pm. We had a gathering of our Board of Directors, Shepherds Staff, Kolbe Cathedral and Notre Dame Staff, a few student guest appearances and of course…our Mentors!

In a cozy room bookended by two, large, stone fireplaces, the cocktails and conversation flowed as new Mentors chatted with Board Members, current Mentors, former Mentors and took a few moments to see their student on the ‘big screen’ giving a personalized message about them! And we took plenty of pictures to remember the event!

Dear Shepherds Friends,

Have you noticed how the season for thanks-giving gives way to the season of giving? Both are relevant to our work at Shepherds.

You’ve heard from us in the past how much we appreciate the time, treasure, and talents that mentors, sponsors, donors, and all those connected to Shepherds make and how that contributes to the growth and success of our students each year.

I’d like to highlight the gift of “opportunity” that your generosity and work provides to our students.

Shepherds styles its mission as “closing the opportunity gap for our students” – primarily the educational gap but also the social, intellectual, experiential and cultural opportunity gaps. Our Shepherds’ School Liaisons working with Shepherds Program Manager have two ways of implementing this part of our three-part program: one, Shepherds initiated programs and the other, working in concert with our partner school resources and functions. Over the course of this year alone we’ve organized everything from college tours to a corn maze adventure, introduction to cyber security to working in food pantries or hauling Christmas Trees for other
community service organizations that may also be donors to Shepherds.

Planning, organizing and funding these activities and events is how we help close the opportunity the cultural, social and “life skills” gaps and fulfill the mission we’ve all signed up for.

Opportunities abound, we just need to make them available and act upon them. That’s another way of saying, “Changing Lives… One Student at a Time.”

Wishing you and your families a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season,

Dan McAuliffe
